About the Author and Illustrator
Baa, baa, black sheep,
have you any wool?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full.”
Does wool make a blanket for my bed?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir,” the black sheep said.
Honk, honk, gray goose,
have you any down?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, half a pound.”
Does down make a pillow for my head?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir,” the gray goose said.
Cluck, cluck, red hen,
have you any eggs for me?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, one, two, three.”
Do eggs and flour make a loaf of bread?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir,” the red hen said.
Buzz, buzz, yellow bee,
have you any honey?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, sweet and sunny.”
Does sun-sweet honey make a tasty spread?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir,” the yellow bee said.
Moo, moo, brown cow,
have you any milk?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, smooth as silk.”
Does milk make me sleepy before I go to bed?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir,” the brown cow said.
“We’re off to bed, too,” the animals said,
“in the hive,
in the barn …”
“… in the coop,
in the shed.”
“Then we’ll dream
the whole night through,
of flowers to sip,
green grass to chew …”
“… a golden grain of wheat or two, the moon so high and sky so blue .…”
Sleep tight, farm friends.
May I dream with you?
“Yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, please do.”
Phillis Gershator has written numerous books for children. One of her most recent stories, Listen, Listen, illustrated by Alison Jay, was called a “jewel of a book” by Booklist.
Phillis has loved reading since she was a child, so much so that her mother would tell her, “Stop reading! Go out and play!” These days, when she isn’t outside playing, she can be found reading or writing her next story. Phillis lives with her husband in the Virgin Islands.
Giselle Potter’s folksy and distinctive illustrations have graced many children’s books, among them The Boy Who Loved Words by Roni Schotter and Sugar Would Not Eat It by Emily Jenkins. Giselle lives in New York’s Hudson Valley with her husband and two daughters.
